How Schools in Minato City Respond to Typhoons

A heavy rain warning was issued today.

Several private schools had already announced their plans the day before. Keio Yochisha closed for the day, Den-en Chofu Futaba School switched to home learning, and some other private schools moved classes online. Parents were chatting with each other and saying, “Looks like school will be canceled tomorrow.”

So I completely assumed that my son’s public elementary school would also be closed. However, we received a message this morning saying that school would be open as usual! Children could stay home without being marked absent, but classes would still be held.

Public schools seemed to handle the situation differently depending on the area.

A mother in Shibuya told me that her child’s school was closed even though there was no weather warning in their area. She said, “If they’re going to close the school, I wish they would decide the day before.”

Every working parent has different circumstances.

I also heard that schools in Setagaya and Nerima were open as usual.

There is a rumor—though I have no idea whether it’s true—that schools in Minato tend to remain open during heavy rain warnings because there are so many dual-income families.

I’ve heard from parents who cannot take time off work, cannot work remotely, or work in healthcare and other essential professions that having schools remain open is a huge help.

Still, children who go to school in heavy rain certainly grow up to be tough!

That said, it sounds like many students stayed home anyway.

According to the children who attended, it turned out to be a very fun day. There was so much extra school lunch that they could have as many seconds as they wanted. One teacher apparently drank five cartons of milk, which everyone found hilarious.

They were also told, “You can sit wherever you like today!” so the whole day felt special and out of the ordinary.

From what I heard, the children who went to school had a fantastic time.
