ひとくちに「塾選び」と言っても、子どものタイプや目指す進路によって、その戦略は180度変わりますよね。

我が家には3人の子どもがいますが、一番上の子の時は「のびのび子育て」を軸に考えて小学校受験を経験しました。

長女の時代、白金高輪にある「SAPIX（サピックス）」は、早々に募集停止をするほどパンパンでした。未就学児の年長の時点で入塾テストを受けて席を確保しておかないと、「キャンセル待ちが多すぎて一生通えない」と言われるほどの過熱ぶりだったのです。

当時は入塾テストの時期が絶妙で、「私立小に行くか行かないかまだ分からないけれど、とりあえずサピの席だけは確保しておこう」と、とりあえずテストを受けているご家庭が結構いました。

そんな、受験期特有のピリピリした、かつ親も疲労困憊の時期に、ママたちの間で「ある爆笑事件」が多発していたのをご存知でしょうか？

名付けて、『振り込め詐欺の逆バージョン（間違えて振り込みすぎる）事件』です。

桁が一つ多いのですが、お受験モードの脳内では「テスト＝3万円」と自動変換されてしまうんですよね（笑）。

まさかの千円台！ なんと、私の身近な狭いコミュニティだけでも2名もこのやらかしをしていました！保育園のお迎えの際に出会ったママとの束の間の雑談で発覚して爆笑しました。

今思い出しても、お受験期の独特な緊張感と「狂気」を感じる大好きなエピソードです。

■J PREP争奪戦の敗北と、三田校開校の救世主

しかし、そんな狂気の小学校受験が終了しても、親たちの教育熱は止まりません。

私立小学校受験が終わった後の「王道ルート」といえば、英語塾の「J PREP」にとりあえず入るという流れ。こちらの説明会の枠自体がすでに争奪戦なのですが、長女の時は完全に私が出遅れてしまい、説明会枠の時点で敗北。入塾できないという苦い失敗を味わいました。

その失敗を教訓としてガッチリ活かし、次女の時にはリベンジを果たして無事に入塾！

しかもありがたいことに、以前は港区からだと「渋谷校」まで通うのが基本だったのですが、嬉しいことに「三田校」が開校してくれたのです！ 田町駅からも三田駅からもすぐの綺麗な教室で、渋谷まで通わせる親子共々の負担が一気になくなったのは本当に大助かりでした。

一方、公立小に進んだ弟の塾選びは、お姉ちゃんたちとは基準を変え、最初から「中学校受験」をストレートに視野に入れた塾選びをスタートしています。

我が家がそんな試行錯誤をしている間にも、街の教育環境はものすごいスピードで変化しています。

かつて長女の時代にあれほど熾烈だったサピックス白金高輪校の席の争奪戦ですが、生徒数増加に伴い「サピックス白金台校」が開校したことで、あの異常な過熱ぶりは少し緩和されました。

それだけにとどまらず、近年の田町・三田エリアの中学受験ニーズの急上昇に対応するように、大手の進学塾がこれでもかと新設や拡大されています。

情報も選択肢も溢れるエリアだからこそ、周囲の熱気に飲まれすぎず、一歩引いて我が家に最適な選択（と、毎日の送迎の現実的な近さ！）を大切にしていきたいですね。

When we say “choosing a cram school,” the strategy changes 180 degrees depending on the child’s personality and their future goals.

I have three children, and for my eldest daughter, we approached the private elementary school entrance exams with a focus on a “carefree, laid-back upbringing.”

Today, I’d like to share the reality of our battles in choosing thinking-based math schools and English academies, some funny exam-season inside stories that we can finally laugh about now, and the latest education scene in the Tamachi and Mita areas, which has completely transformed over the past few years.

■ The SAPIX Seat Wars and the Hilarious “Reverse Phishing Scam” Incident

Back in my eldest daughter’s days, SAPIX Shirokane-Takanawa was so packed that they had to stop accepting new applicants very early on. The hype was so intense that people used to say, “If you don’t take the entrance exam and secure a seat by the time they are in the senior year of kindergarten, the waitlist will be so long you’ll never get in.”

The timing of the entrance test was tricky. Many parents whose children were in limbo—not yet knowing whether they would end up attending a private elementary school—took the SAPIX test anyway, just to secure a spot “just in case.”

And right there, in the middle of that high-stakes, exhausting period, a hilarious phenomenon was happening among the moms.

I call it the “Reverse Phishing Scam”—where parents were accidentally transferring way too much money.

Utterly exhausted, many moms accidentally transferred “30,000 yen” instead of 3,000 yen when signing up for the SAPIX test.

They added an extra zero without realizing it, because their “exam-mode” brains automatically converted any test fee into 30,000 yen! They couldn’t even fathom a test costing in the 3,000-yen range. Amazingly, within my own small, immediate circle of friends, two moms pulled off this exact blunder! Looking back, it perfectly captures the unique tension and “madness” of that exam season.

Even after that madness subsides, the passion for education never cools down.

Once the private elementary school entrance exams are over, the “royal road” for many families is to immediately enroll their kids in the prestigious English school, J PREP. However, with my eldest daughter, I completely missed the boat. I lost the brutal battle just trying to secure a slot for the introductory information session and failed to get her in.

To make things even better, while the closest branch for Minato Ward residents used to be the Shibuya campus, the Mita campus has now opened! It’s a place where traditional local life naturally blends with the new families moving into the newly built tower mansions, public and private school students, international school kids, and a wonderfully multicultural group of children.
