To go see The Devil Wears Prada 2 at the movie theater that night, I started the day full of energy — making lunch boxes for the kids and doing the morning school run. I also cooked cream stew for dinner in advance.
After work, I drove my younger child to their after-school activities, and because my older daughter had lessons that would run late into the evening, I prepared dinner for her to eat right after getting home from school before heading out myself.
The last time I went to see a movie with friends was Sex and the City back in 2008 — so it had been 18 years. And now, nearly 20 years after The Devil Wears Prada, we finally got its sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The movie vividly captured how much society has changed over the past two decades. I found myself bursting out laughing scene after scene.
After the movie, talking excitedly with friends — “That scene was amazing!” “I loved that part!” — was pure happiness. The three of us kept chatting until the restaurant closed.
One of the friends I watched it with had lived in the U.S. for ten years (she’s currently back in Japan because she won tickets to the final concert of Arashi). She couldn’t stop noticing how heavily localized the subtitles for the male characters’ lines were. She kept saying, “I can’t just enjoy the movie normally anymore!” Her brain seemed busy the entire time.
On the way home, I passed by the ongoing redevelopment around Shinagawa Station, Takanawa Gateway Station, and Tamachi Station. Everywhere was still deep in construction, and the old Morinaga building near Tamachi had completely lost its former appearance. For the first time, I could actually see the Tamachi Station sign that used to be hidden behind buildings.
I love old architecture, so whenever I see these changes, I find myself wishing that older buildings could be preserved and creatively reused instead of simply being demolished.
